One of the most celebrated red carpets of the year falls on the first Monday of May with the Met Gala. The theme of the annual fundraiser for the Met’s Costume Institute this year was Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty. The Met describes the theme and exhibition as, “the artistic methodology and stylistic vocabulary of Karl Lagerfeld's designs through recurring themes across more than 65 years, from the 1950s to his final collection in 2019.” A diverse selection of elite athletes attended the prestigious event. The list included a range from F1 drivers and tennis players to NFL and NBA players. They celebrated the life’s work of the late, legendary designer in style with a heavy emphasis on tweed, black and white, and pearls. Here are all of your favorite Pros’ looks!

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

Fresh off of his first All-Star season, Shai Gilgeous Alexander had the chance to delve into one of his biggest off-court hobbies and join the fashion world at the Met Gala. Gilgeous-Alexander was one of the standouts of the night in a full Thom Browne look. He channeled his inner Karl Lagerfeld in an oversized grosgrain ribbon tweed coat with an open collar worn over a tuxedo shirt with a silk faille bow tie. The Oklahoma City Thunder star added cropped mohair trousers and a cummerbund, and he layered a cardigan and skirt set underneath his coat. Gilgeous-Alexander accessorized with longwing boots and plenty of pearls. The Pro is not new to Thom Browne. He made his runway debut at the Thom Brown Spring 2023 menswear show in Paris. The cardigan and skirt set that Gilgeous-Alexander wore was composed of the same fabric as his look in the runway show, and they were the first two pieces chosen for the look.

Dwyane Wade

Making a splash on the Met Gala red carpet in back-to-back years, Dwyane Wade arrived in head-to-toe Prada. The soon-to-be hall of famer took a more subtle approach to the theme this year than 2022’s shirtless look. He and his stylist, Jason Bolden, strived to allude to Karl Lagerfeld’s work while staying true to Prada’s house codes. Wade styled a black Panama mohair coat with a black leather gilet and black Panama mohair tuxedo trousers. The mock neck of the gilet, the leather, and the all black were all nods to Karl. The finishing touches included black leather gloves with Prada’s signature triangle-shaped pouch and black Chelsea boots. Wade’s wife, actress Gabrielle Union, also wore Prada. She chose a red chiffon crepon gown paired with black leather pumps and a red leather clutch.

Russell Westbrook

Russell Westbrook returned to the Met Gala red carpet and showed off his well-known, adventurous style. The Los Angeles Clippers point guard wore a Bode look that was just as audacious as his history of triple-doubles. His fit included a pale lemon cardigan and paisley-patterned dress pants. The cardigan was reminiscent of Chanel’s classic tweed jackets, and the star basketball player wore nothing underneath in keeping with his penchant for showing a little skin. Westbrook’s pants were a tribute to Karl Lagerfeld’s love of interior design. He topped the fit off with a pearl bolo necklace and unique dress shoes.

Patrick Mahomes

Continuing his winning year, Patrick Mahomes attended his first Met Gala. Mahomes extended his collaboration with Boss after also wearing the brand to celebrate the Chiefs’ Super Bowl win at the NFL Draft this past weekend. The multiple-time MVP kept it simple in a classic double-breasted Boss suit. Mahomes’ collarless shirt showed off his chain. He accessorized with Oakley sunglasses and Christian Louboutin loafers. His wife, Brittney, also wore Boss. She chose a white gown with embellished off-the-shoulder straps.

Roger Federer

Twenty-time Grand Slam champion and one of the best to ever play the game of tennis, Roger Federer, has been enjoying his recent retirement and exploring new endeavors. The latest of these was co-chairing the Met Gala. In his second appearance at the event, Federer wore a Dior tuxedo and patent leather dress shoes. Upon arrival, he showed off his upcoming sunglass collaboration with Oliver Peoples. He sported a pair from the collection that will be dropping in Spring 2024.

Brittney Griner

One of the most inspiring moments of the night was witnessing Brittney Griner and her wife, Cherelle. Cherelle mentioned to Vogue that this time last year, she was missing her wife and that being with her at their first Met Gala was “breathtaking.” Both were dressed by Calvin Klein. The brand took a very thoughtful approach to their looks that encapsulated their love for each other. Inspired by strength and sensuality, Calvin Klein described their designs for the night on Instagram as “intimate, empowered, and connected.” Brittney opted for a champagne colored suit with a long jacket and sheer shirt, while Cherelle chose an off-white strapless dress. The words “This is love” were sewed in to the inside of Cherelle’s dress which perfectly described their red carpet moment.

Serena Williams

Serena Williams seems to excel at everything she does. Whether it’s one of her regular Met Gala red carpet outings or playing tennis, the recently retired Pro shines above the rest. Announcing on the red carpet that she is pregnant with her second child, Williams was glowing. Both she and her husband, Alexis Ohania, were dressed by Gucci. The tennis star paid tribute to Karl Lagerfeld in her dress with her black and white color scheme, many strands of pearls, and cuffs on her sleeves.

Stefon Diggs

This off-season, Stefon Diggs has noticeably shown an even more pronounced involvement in the fashion industry. He has been featured on magazine covers and spotted at fashion week in both the United States and Europe, so it was no surprised to see the star wide receiver attend fashion’s Super Bowl, the Met Gala. Diggs was invited by Tommy Hilfiger and wore a custom tweed suit by the brand. The look was as clean as his routes. In keeping with the Chanel by Karl Lagerfeld vibes, his look featured pearl details including pearl buttons, a pearl necklace, and a pearl brooch. Diggs finished the look with a wallet chain that also included pearls and Chanel’s signature leather-intertwined chain.

Eileen Gu

Olympic freestyle skier, Eileen Gu, stood out at the Met Gala in a gown from Robert Wun’s debut couture collection. The Spring 2023 Couture gown features a brand-signature peplum and a train. The most prominent feature of the dress is the faux wine stains which were an unexpected but fun twist. Gu replaced the wine glass with which the gown was originally shown with a modern take on a vintage stopwatch by IWC Schaffhausen watches. This could be a shoutout to her athletic background.

Daniel Ricciardo

F1 driver, Daniel Ricciardo, made his Met Gala debut this year. After previously stating the event was too formal for him, Ricciardo’s appearance in Thom Browne was a welcome surprise addition. His custom look included a button down and a black sleeveless v-neck 4-bar cardigan made from fine merino wool. The normally speedy driver took the time to accessorize with a black wool pique suiting bow tie and leather boots. The result was a successful first outing to the Met Gala.

Matteo Berrettini

In the midst of recovering from an injury, Italian tennis champion Matteo Berrettini, had a break in his tennis calendar to walk the red carpet at the Met. Sponsored by Boss on and off the court, Berrettini wore the brand for the momentous occasion. He kept things clean in an oversized, all black, double-breasted suit. His accessories included a matching black bow tie and shiny, black leather dress shoes.

The 2023 Met Gala proved that the Pros are just as skilled at red carpet appearances as they are when they compete. Their references to Karl Lagerfeld’s work stood out as they walked up the steps to the Met. As the fashion world and the sports world continue to overlap more than ever, we can look forward to seeing an increased presence of Pros at the Met Gala.
