A long southern dirt strip filled with family and hoops was the road that paved Tamera “Ty” Young’s childhood. The Wilmington, North Carolina native excelled not only in the same town but high school that produced the great Michael Jordan. Ty had no problem leaving her mark tho, as the high school’s all-time leading scorer, her future on the court was bright. Staying close to her southern roots, Ty played collegiately at James Madison University. She smashed records at both the University and conference and holds the record for scoring in the Colonial Athletic Association conference.
The eighth overall pick in the 2008 WNBA draft, Young joined the inaugural season of Atlanta’s expansion team, the Dream. Following suit of many WNBA players, Young’s professional career resulted in a lot of stamps in her passport. Three league championships and one MVP award overseas has kept this stars shoes laced for years. A consistent player throughout the league, her longest tenure with a team was the nine seasons she played with the Chicago Sky. Ty joined the new formed Las Vegas Aces in 2018, scoring the franchises’ first ever regular season points. Ty continues her reign in the Sin City and has led the team in assists on three different occasions.
Ty boasts one of the largest sneaker collections in professional sports. Her extensive collection holds some of the rarest and most unique sneakers ever made, but one of her favorite go-to’s is red sneakers. She boasts that she could wear a pair everyday without a repeat. Her mother purchased the first pair of basketball shoes for Ty, the Fila Grant Hill 1’s, and has not bought her another pair since.
