Emigrating with his family to Paris from their home of Conakry, Guinea, soccer was the sport that dominated the early life of Sekou Doumbouya. It wasn’t until a basketball was placed in his hands at age 12 that his true passion for the game was revealed. The lanky teen joined the French National Institute of Sport, Expertise and Performance just two years later, exposing his skills to professional talent throughout the country.
Signing his first professional contract at age 15, Sekou had his eyes on the NBA prize! He played three seasons with Poitiers Basket 86 team before moving up in the national ranks. He joined the top league in France in 2018, the LNB Pro A, as a member of the Limoges CSP team. In his one season, he scored an average of 7.7 points with 3.2 rebounds per game. In just an unbelievable seven years after discovering the game, Sekou was being drafted in the first round of the 2019 NBA Draft. The No.15 overall pick to the Detroit Pistons, Sekou was the youngest player in his draft class. With intentions to keep the young forward as a two-way player between the squad’s G-League team, Sekou has blown away the league with his efficiency and elevated play at such a young age.
