LaMelo was born to parents with professional basketball background and got his first coaching from his father LaVar Ball as the age of four. Alongside him, his two brothers Lonzo and LiAngelo were also trained to play. Throughout a young age LaMelo played in several amateur clubs as well as the Big Ballers AAU. His career began at Chino Hills High School in California where he played against boys that were way older than him.
By the end of 2016 LaMelo was averaging 30 points per game. In February 2016, he scored a record 92 points, dedicating his achievements to a classmate who was awaiting an extreme heart transplant operation. His talents during high school ball drew attention from multiple colleges and universities. LaMelo ended up verbally committed to UCLA.
In 2017, before his junior season, LaMelo lefts Chino Hills to be homeschooled and later on signed to play professionally overseas with his brother LiAngelo. During his senior year LaMello joined SPIRE Institute and Academy, a school in Ohio. During March in 2019 LaMelo scored 41 points, 29 within the first half, at the Grind Session World Championship. He was named MVP. In the 2020 NBA draft, LaMelo was selected third overall pick by the Charlotte Hornets. His brother, Lonzo who was chosen number 2 overall in the 2017 daft, and LaMelo became the first set of brothers to both be draft in the top 3 of the NBA draft.
LaMelo is incredibly interested in fashion. In fact, he had his first collaboration with puma in November 2020. He also launched a new designer clothing brand called LaFrance.
His father created JBA, an alternative to college basketball, which LaMelo played and was signed with the LA Ballers.
