Hailing from Yaoundé, Cameroon, Joel Embiid had other dreams before basketball. He had plans to play professional volleyball in Europe. Those plans changed when he met Luc Mbah a Moute, a fellow native of Yaounde and an NBA player, discovered him at a basketball camp. Joel moved to the USA at 16 to hone his basketball skills. His power and size helped him capture a state championship his senior year and a scholarship offer from the University of Kansas.
Joel's impact was immediate at Kansas. In his one year, he was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors and named second-team All-Big 12. A stress fracture in his back caused him to miss the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments. He slid in the 2014 NBA Draft to third where the Philadelphia 76ers claimed him. It would be two years before he would make his debut. But, in 2016, the whole world felt the return. He won three consecutive Rookie of the Month honors before a knee injury ended his season. 2017 he saw his first All-Star selection and playoff berth. Joel is one of the league's premier defenders, one of the last elite big men.
At 7'0", Joel is tall even among the tall. Fashion for the big man is a balancing act of comfort, fit and style, one he performs well. His pregame fits feature track pants and sweatshirts, often with designer labels. Joel's suits - always custom - show off his flair for colors. Every athlete has their way of addressing their unique needs. Joel has very unique needs to address, and looks good doing it.
