Elijah Hugh, son of Wayne and Penny Hughes, was born in Poughkeepsie, New York. Elijah grew up in Beacon, New York and began his love for basketball through the Catholic Youth Organization. His talent was instantly noticeable as he dominated local games at Loopers Park and started playing on the Amateur Athletic Union circuit. After his eighth grade season, Elijah began his high school career at Beacon High School, where he was called up to play varsity. Despite his size, he mainly played point guard during his time there.
Entering his junior year, Elijah transferred to John F. Kennedy Catholic High School and lead his team to a 26-2 record. Earning the titles on first-team Class A All-State and CHSAA Class A MVP, Elijah wrapped up his junior season. After, he committed to play college ball for East Carolina. At the start of his college career, he averaged 7.8 and 2.3 rebounds in 27 games as a freshman, missing seven games due to injury.
Elijah decided to transfer to Syracuse after announcing his departure from East Carolina. Because of NCAA transfer rules, Elijah redshirted a year and was later named started for ‘Cuse as he entered his redshirt sophomore season. He was the second leading scorer on the team averaging 13.7 points per game along with 4.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.2 steals per game as well as taking the most three-pointers than any other teammate. By his redshirt junior season, Elijah was titled to the watch list for the Julius Erving Award. He was later named first-team All-ACC. Elijah then declared he would be entering the 2020 NBA Draft. Elijah was the 39th pick in the second round of the 2020 NBA Draft by the New Orleans Pelicans. Elijah’s draft rights were then traded to the Utah Jazz. In November of 2020 Elijah signed with the Utah Jazz.
In terms of fashion, Elijah Hughes is all about the sneaker game—rumor has it he has quite the extensive collection! In a recent interview on syracuse.com Elijah guesses he owns 70-80 pairs of athletic shoes. His teammates even named him the shoe king.
Elijah is the sixth of seven children.
