The Arizona Diamondbacks are the next big league club to unveil their new Nike MLB City connect uniform, becoming the fifth of seven teams so far to do so in the inaugural campaign of Nike’s new uniform program. The jersey is gold and reads ‘Serpientes” across the front, which is the Spanish translation of Snakes to pay tribute to the Hispanic Culture that is prominent in Arizona. On the right sleeve is the Arizona state flag and on the left is their “A” logo to highlight the Sonoran Desert’s sand. Lastly, the patch on the bottom front of the jersey is a “V” iocktag, which is a nod to Phoenix’s moniker, the Valley of the Sun. The new caps will also carry the same color scheme as the jersey.
The Diamondbacks will debut the uniforms June 18 against the Los Angeles Dodgers and they plan on wearing them six more times this season. Arizona Diamondbacks Pro David Peralta, who is Venezuelan, was very thrilled with the announcement stating “I was really excited about that because we are involving the Spanish community in a special way. Arizona has a really big Hispanic community, for me to be part of that, I am really proud and excited about it”. D-Backs President and CEO Derrick Hall worked with Nike and their players all last season to survey their thoughts and opinions on the new jerseys.
The Serpientes jersey will replace their alternate “Los D-Backs” jersey and be a part of the regular jersey rotation next season depending on if the fans like it. Hall stated “If there’s strong support and enthusiasm from the fans or players, we will encourage our guys to rotate them in more”. The team has not been afraid of being the first on trying new jersey designs out. Back in 2016 season, the team unveiled a complete redesign featuring a polarizing gradient snake skin pattern on their jerseys and pants, which to say the least didn’t do so well.
The next MLB teams to debut their 2021 city connect jerseys will be the San Francisco Giants in July and the Dodgers in August. So far, the only other teams to debut the new theme are the Boston Red Sox, Miami Marlins, Chicago White Sox, and the Chicago Cubs clubs. The rest of the league will debut in the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
